Menopause can be separated into three distinct periods; the early signs, mid-signs and late signs of menopause. The early signs of menopause involves hot flashes, sweating and usually starts in the mid or late thirties and later. The mid signs of menopause is a progression of the symptoms of early menopause such as frequent hot flashes, mood changes and prolonged or inhibited menstrual cycles.
Here are the late signs of menopause:
Stiff and swollen joints particularly the knees and ankles
Stiff and swollen joints are common late signs of menopause. This is due to hormonal changes that make the body retain more fluid than normal.
Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are very common in late menopause. They tend to appear larger or more severe than normal.
Mood changes
Mood changes can appear very suddenly and without warning. At the late stage of menopause, family and friends will notice changes in your mood. Even your co-workers will notice changes in your mood which is not normal of you.
Loss of sexual drive
If you noticed that you are having less sex than normal or your partner is complaining of not enough sex, than this is a key sign that you have lost your sex drive which is one of the signs of late menopause.
Urine Incontinence
Urine incontinence or passing urine without control is very common with late menopause. A very high percentage of women who have menopause (above 50-60 per cent) will have urine incontinence. Unfortunately, it can be very embarrassing for women when they lose the ability to control the bladder and are usually kept undercover or hidden from family and friends. The urine incontinence is caused by weakness of the pelvic diaphragm because changes in hormones make the muscles in the pelvis weak and stretched. But, urine incontinence can be easily reversed and managed well with exercise and pelvic floor techniques.
Vaginal Dryness
As there is a lack of oestrogen, the vagina becomes very dry. This results in frequent bladder infection and irritation or itchiness in the genitals.
Depression
Depression is common with menopause. Because sexual drive, bladder issues and mood swings have an impact on the normal daily activities of a woman. For instance, it is difficult for a woman to work normally if she has urinary incontinence which can interrupt her work which can happen at any time. This can make a woman depressed.
Thinning hair
Take note if you are finding more hair in your hair brush than normal or you find that your scalp looks slightly lighter on one side. Thinning hair is one of the main symptoms of late menopause.
